Book: Finding ‘Glimpses of God’

Spread the love

By Betty Lou Roselle

I am constantly trying to become a more spiritual person but am definitely a work in progress.

My friend Suzanne’s sister Jeannie Chamberlain is someone who achieved that higher calling. I still remember her saying to me about her ex-boyfriend that she hopes he’s happy and saying to me I’m sure you feel the same way about Chris (my ex-husband). Laughing I said I am not as good as you, I don’t wish him any harm but I can’t hope that he’s happy. Jeannie died about 10 years ago and everyone that knew her felt she was an angel walking the earth.

Reading Glimpses of God: Seeing God in Everyday Life by Cookie Magee, D.Min made me realize how much further I need to go. She wrote the book hoping to get people to realize in a greater way that God is present.

In the first chapter Magee finds God in chickens. That’s right, and all her discoveries are filled with insight and a nice sprinkle of humor.  The book is intended to be read in sections, each one bringing a new way of finding Him. This is a much needed book for the world we are living in today. I was amazed of all the places she finds God. It’s also filled with encouragement that you can find Him too, you just have to look.

When we met, Cookie gave me her biography to read, a 53 page book called Shopping for a Lighter Cross. This is a powerful story that I could not put down. To say Cookie had a tough time growing up would put it mildly. Her one escape was the Catholic religion she was taught in private school.

She was a victim of abuse but amazingly instead of it making her bitter she turned her life over to God. After school, she even thought about becoming a nun, eventually deciding not to. Cookie met John, her soulmate on a blind date and they eventually married. He supports her mission to help others, she says he is her 24/7 glimpse of God.

Dr. Magee has followed a path of faith her entire life. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Theology and worked in the Philadelphia Archdiocese for thirty years.

After reading her biography, it made sense that she is able to find God in all the many ways he is present. Having survived what she did  gives her an incredible empathy for others and she constantly reminds her readers how loved they are by God. I pick up this book first thing in the morning and read one of the chapters to start my day. She has a website containing a compilation of her glimpses which have turned into her latest book.
