The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time because its story very closely mirrors my own family. Like Christopher in the play, my stepson’s mother moved far away when he was four, for a number of reasons, including the difficulty she had in raising a child on the spectrum. Christopher ventures out into a world from which he has been largely sheltered, a brave act born of the desperation from a series of huge misunderstandings.

For people like me – parents and stepparents and families facing the challenges of properly preparing children with special needs to deal with a cold and unsympathetic world – Christopher’s character and his journey represent a sliver of hope that what we’ve tried to teach has not gone unheeded. Christopher gives us optimism that our kids are going to be okay, that they will find it within themselves to advocate for themselves and learn how to function in society in a way that keeps them safe from harm.

You should see this play for all the usual reasons: this cast is amazing, they’re doing a brilliant job and the play is going to be really, really good. But you should also see it because there are an estimated 5,437,988 adults in this country on the autism spectrum, which means there’s a very good chance that you or someone you know is impacted by autism. This play opens a window into a world of a neurodivergent person and his family, plus their collective challenges, mistakes and successes. For me, that’s what theatre is about: bringing people together in an attempt to better understand each other. And that is something that The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time does brilliantly. – Director Kristyn Walko
