People’s Light Extends ‘The Porch on Windy Hill’

Malvern-based theatre People’s Light announced an extension to the upcoming regional premiere presentation of The  Porch on Windy Hill, a new play with old music by David M. Lutken, Sherry Stregack Lutken, Lisa Helmi Johanson, and Morgan Morse. The theatre has added seven performances and extends the show’s run through Oct. 20. The Porch on Windy Hill is presented on the Steinbright Stage, an intimate, flexible 140-seat theatre.

The story follows a young couple who leave their life in Brooklyn for the mountains of North Carolina in search of musical inspiration. It features live performances of a dozen traditional American roots melodies played on a mix of guitars, violins, banjos, and an erhu. Conceived and directed by Sherry  Stregack Lutken, the production’s cast features audience-favorite David M. Lutken returning to the People’s Light stage with actors Rob Morrison and EJ Zimmerman.

People’s Light begins its golden anniversary season with a journey through Appalachia, where Bluegrass/Americana meets a worldly perspective on musical roots and family ties. In The Porch on Windy Hill, Mira (Zimmerman), a biracial Korean American violinist, and her boyfriend Beckett (Morrison) reconnect with her estranged grandfather Edgar (Lutken), delving into the joys and pains of the past. In the mountains of North Carolina, they discover the ability to bridge divides and heal wounds through the power of music. Set against a backdrop of authentic “old-time” and Bluegrass melodies, this heartwarming tale combines endearing characters and traditional instruments in a harmonious exploration of heritage and human connection.

The Porch on Windy Hill had a 2021 world premiere at the Ivoryton Playhouse in Connecticut and three productions in Chicago, Illinois, Lowell, Massachusetts, and Weston, Vermont.

Opera Philadelphia Offers ‘Pick Your Price’ Tickets

Anthony Roth Costanzo, the star countertenor who took the helm as General Director and President on June 1, announced today that all tickets for every performance of Opera Philadelphia’s 2024-2025 Season will be available for $11, or a higher price of your choosing, as part of a new initiative called Pick Your Price. The pioneering ticket program, the first of its kind initiated by a major American opera company, represents a radical shift aimed at bringing opera to more people.

Price can be a big barrier to entry at the opera, and ticket sales are a metric that too often determines how we program, how we engage, and how we market. If we are worried about making sure we sell expensive tickets, it limits the possibility of who we reach and what we make. “Pick Your Price invites everyone to connect with Opera Philadelphia at a price that works for them. We hope it encourages audiences to take a risk and try something new, allows parents to bring their children more easily, and spurs opera lovers to come to more performances. It makes the cost of a night out to dinner and a show more manageable. Ultimately, our goal is to bring opera to more people and bring more people to the opera. – Anthony Roth Costanzo

International opera star and 2023 Kennedy Center honoree Renée Fleming spoke to what a ticket access program at this scale means for the field: “This is a landmark moment for opera and a new intrepid model for how we connect with audiences.”

Pick Your Price starts now, and tickets are available for all three productions in the 2024-2025 Season: Missy Mazzoli and Royce Vavrek’s The Listeners (Sept. 25, 27, & 29, 2024), Joseph Bologne’s The Anonymous Lover (Jan. 31 & Feb. 2, 2025), and Mozart’s Don Giovanni (April 25 & 27, May 2 & 4, 2025).

Pick Your Price is accessible immediately at operaphila.org.

Philadelphia Theatre Company celebrates 50 years with the Philadelphia premiere of ‘La Egoísta’ (‘The Selfish’)

Philadelphia Theatre Company launches its milestone 50th anniversary season with La Egoísta (“The Selfish”).  This touching and humorous play perfectly embodies the season’s theme, “We’re a Philly Thing! A season of plays of, by, and for the people of Philadelphia.”

Written by Dominican American playwright and Philadelphia native Erlina Ortiz, La Egoísta reflects the vibrancy and resilience of the city’s diverse communities. With an all-Hispanic/Latino-identifying cast and creative team, the production will coincide with the Hispanic Heritage Month celebration.

Directed by Tatyana-Marie Carlo, La Egoísta tells the story of two sisters, bonded by duty and love, whose relationship is tested by the challenges of career ambitions, caregiving, and what it means to sacrifice for the ones you love. La Egoísta first premiered in February 2023 (Actors Theatre of Louisville/ Louisville, KY) following a reading at the 2022 Latinx Theatre Commons. As a 2022 National Latine Playwrights Award winner, this production’s Philadelphia premiere marks an essential moment in PTC’s  history, spotlighting the rich, multifaceted narratives that define the city.

Josefina (Sasha Merci), La Egoísta’s witty protagonist, is a wildly funny, independent, and  compassionate big sister and Philadelphia-based stand-up comedian who takes nothing seriously except the well-being of her little sister Betsaida (María Gabriela González). When Betsaida becomes ill just as Josefina’s career begins to take off, she experiences an inevitable clash between her responsibility toward her sister and the pursuit of her dream.

Marisol Rosa-Shapiro and Jonathan Tineo are also featured in the show.

Playwright Erlina Ortiz and director Tatyana-Marie Carlo share a robust artistic connection, united by their commitment to telling powerful, culturally resonant stories that center on themes of identity, family, and the Latine experience.

Quintessence Theatre Presents Martin Crimp’s ‘Cyrano De Bergerac’

For fourteen years, Quintessence Theatre has produced award-winning theatre at the Sedgwick in Mt. Airy and is kicking off its XV Anniversary Season with a blockbuster play that embodies the company’s “classics forward” approach to drama and literature. Considered one of the world’s one hundred greatest plays, Quintessence is thrilled to produce the Philadelphia Premiere of the adaptation of Edmond Rostand’s Cyrano de Bergerac by “in-yer-face” British playwright Martin Crimp.

The beloved pioneer of panache, Cyrano de Bergerac, is a celebration of the power of language. Roxane loves the beautiful-bodied but dim-witted and inarticulate Christian. Cyrano is a genius with words and a masterful swordsman but his long nose makes him embittered and fearful to profess his love. So instead of fighting, Cyrano offers Christian the use of his poetry in order to win Roxane’s affection with more than just looks, and a powerful and often hilarious love triangle is set in motion. Through spoken word, slam poetry, raps and rhymes, this Cyrano breaks out into contemporary culture and becomes instantly recognizable as a man trapped by love and the worth of beauty.

Returning Quintessence Theatre artists are Lee Thomas Cortopassi as Ligniere, Janis Dardaris as Leila Ragueneau, Gabriel Elmore as Valvert, J. Hernandez as Cyrano, Daniel Chase Miller as Christian and Kelechi Udenkwo as Le Bret. Making their Quintessence debuts are Erica Lynn Bridge as Roxanne, Tim Dugan as De Guiche, Liam Gerard as Montfleury, and Laiah Westlyn as Marie-Louise. All other roles will be played by the Ensemble.

If You Go

“Cyrano de Bergerac” runs Sept. 25-Oct. 20. Opening Night is Saturday, Oct. 5 at 7:30 p.m. Reserved tickets start at $30, and multiple discounts are available, including day-of RUSH tickets for $10. Premium seats are available starting at $40.

  • Pay-What-You-Can (Sept. 25)

Walnut Street Theatre Opens With ‘Jersey Boys’

Walnut Street Theatre (WST) begins their 216th season with the Broadway musical phenomenon Jersey Boys. Go behind the music and inside the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons with this Broadway musical phenomenon. The show begins previews on October 1, opens Oct. 9, and closes on Nov. 3.

They were just four guys from Jersey, and while their harmonies were perfect on stage, off stage it was a very different story — their story has made them an international sensation all over again. This Broadway-hit takes you behind the music and inside the story of Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito, and Nick Massi as we explore the rise of one of the most iconic pop bands in American music history.

With a book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, music by The Four Seasons member Bob Gaudio, and lyrics by Bob Crewe, the show premiered on Broadway in 2005 to critical acclaim and has won four Tony Awards. The documentary-style show dramatizes the personal and professional struggles of the members of The Four Seasons, from early brushes with the law to the group’s induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The show features a rich selection of the band’s greatest hits, including “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Walk Like a Man,” and “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You.”

Richard Stafford returns to the Walnut as Director/Choreographer, having previously directed and choreographed numerous Mainstage shows, including Beautiful – The Carole King Musical. In addition to his work with the Walnut, Stafford has also choreographed on Broadway and the New York City Opera. Music and vocal direction will be provided by Chris Burcheri, whose Walnut credits include Disney’s Beauty and the Beast; Elvis – A Musical Revolution; Rocky, the Musical; and Beautiful – The Carole King Musical. Burcheri has also served as the music director for the WST for Kids series and the Associate Conductor on Annie and Holiday Inn.

Returning to the Walnut for the first time since his role as Bobby C in Saturday Night Fever is Will Stephan Connell as Frankie Valli, the frontman of The Four Seasons. Appearing alongside Connell as band member Bob Gaudio is Eddie Olmo II, fresh from his role as Barry Mann in Beautiful – The Carole King Musical. Returning to the Walnut as a founding member of the band, Tommy Devito, is Ken Sandberg, last seen in Elvis – A Musical Revolution. Rounding out The Four Seasons quartet and appearing as Nick Massi is Chris Stevens, known for his role as Gaston in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.

Walnut favorite Fran Prisco takes on the role of mob boss Gyp Decarlo in his 41st WST production, having just appeared in last season’s Beautiful – The Carole King Musical and Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. Appearing as producer Bob Crewe is Ryan Kleinman, who made his Walnut debut with Beautiful – The Carole King Musical.

Returning to the Walnut as various friends and paramours of the band members are Walnut veterans Kimberly Maxson (Jimmy Buffett’s Escape to Margaritaville; Disney’s Beauty and the Beast), Dana Orange (Disney’s Beauty and the Beast; Beautiful – The Carole King Musical), Kerri Rose (Saturday Night Fever; A Christmas Story), and Audrey Biehl Simmons (Disney’s Beauty and the Beast; Beautiful – The Carole King Musical).

Making their WST Mainstage acting debuts and rounding out the cast are Tommy Craig, who understudied for Beautiful – The Carole King Musical, and Dance Captain/Associate Choreographer Joseph Cullinane.

Returning to the Walnut to bring the streets of New Jersey to the Walnut’s stage is Scenic Designer John Farrell, whose designs were seen most recently in Aspects of Love on the Mainstage. Joining Farrell are Walnut veterans Lighting Designer Matt DeMascolo (Disney’s Beauty and the Beast) and Sound Designer

Ed Chapman (Disney’s Beauty and the Beast), along with Assistant Lighting Designer Jen Donsky. Returning to the Walnut fresh from Beautiful – The Carole King Musical to costume our rockstars and capture the iconic hair of the 60s are Costume Designer Mary Folino and Wig Designer Carissa Thorlakson.

From the streets of New Jersey to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, this is the musical that’s just too good to be true!  The 2024-25 season also includes: Elf the Broadway Musical, Driving Miss Daisy, Noël Coward’s Hay Fever, and Dreamgirls.

Subscriptions are available now for as little as $26 per show – up to a 75% savings compared to regular ticket prices! Individual tickets go on-sale July 23. For information on season subscriptions or individual tickets, call the Walnut at 215-574-3550 x6 or visit WalnutStreetTheatre.org.

Bone-Chilling ‘Winterborn’

This September, LGBTQ artist, performer, choreographer, and producer Gunnar Montana brings his masterful choreography, stunning set design, and bone-chilling storytelling to the stage with his latest production, BLACK WOOD: WINTERBORN. The production is a sequel to last year’s Fringe smash-hit and most popular show to date, BLACK WOOD. Montana’s Fringe  Festival show runs at the Latvian Society of Philadelphia (531 N. 7th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19123) from Sept. 5 to Oct.30, with an exceptional Halloween performance on Oct. 31.

WINTERBORN brings back the heroines from last year, a coven of witches channeling their spellbinding femininity for power and features new scorned lovers and creatures of the night. Embracing notions of sorcery, enchantment, and even cannibalism, Montana takes audiences on an hour-long journey into the shadows of the night to explore the dark side of humanity, spiritualism, and mysticism through stunning choreography and a twisted tale.

A visually intricate show, WINTERBORN begins when audience members step into the 75-seat venue resembling a realistic dark, eerie, and cold forest, highlighted by snow and ice. Massive set pieces like a 100′ by 15′ spooky tree mural have transformed the venue into a frosty, woodsy landscape with a  slaughterhouse, haunted well, elk antlers, fur pelts, thickets, and trees. As in past years, audiences will be in awe of the set Montana spent the last several months designing and building from scratch. He also created the choreography and costumes and curated the pulsating and hauntingly beautiful soundtrack.

If You Go:

WINTERBORN runs from Sept. 5 to Oct. 31, Wednesday to Sunday at 8 p.m. Tickets start at $49. There are also discounted student tickets available for $45. VIP packages and enhanced seating options are also available, beginning at $65. Audiences can also experience a one-night-only spooktacular Halloween performance on Oct. 31 featuring never before-seen additional content, a post-performance party with the cast and crew, and a swag bag.
