The Last Days of Judas Iscariot

Setting: 2005, a courtroom in Purgatory

Action: Trial in progress

Defendant: Judas Iscariot

Witnesses: Satan, Sigmund Freud, Mother Teresa and assorted other saints and biblical figures

First staged off Broadway at the Public Theater in March 2005 directed by Philip Seymour Hoffman, the show is an imagined court hearing in which the ultimate fate of Judas will be determined. A large cast of zany characters present evidence in a series of riotous monologs throughout the play.

“Stephen Adly Guirgis has written a real jaw-dropper…raw language and flamboyantly street-savvy characters…his imagination is dazzling and his command of language is downright thrilling.” Variety
