Book: Searching for ‘The Waw’

Spread the love

By Karen McCarraher

The Waw by Jacqueline Gay Walley is a story is about a woman writer living in New York City. She has a boyfriend, Kurt, but he is somewhat indifferent to her.  She had a vision of a seaside English village, and she felt drawn to it.  She was seeking her “Waw” Is this village it?

The Waw is described as a feeling of peace and happiness.  This is what Mira desperately wants.

She researches and finds the place she thinks she has been looking for.  She leaves New York and everything behind and travels to this village.  She encounters several very interesting characters.  There is her eccentric landlady Lucia, who talks to God; George, who owns the village coffee shop and who gives out life advice; Skene, a handsome, unmarried resident of the village who is interested in Mira; and Sir Leo, the 100-year-old former concert maestro who still plays tennis.  Each one of these enriches her life in a different way.  She goes back and forth to New York because of her work but always returns to the little seaside town.

Each of her friends contributes something toward Mira’s search for her Waw.  She learns that solitude is not loneliness and love, even after many years, still exists.  Has Mira found her Waw?  I hope so; and if this isn’t it, I hope she has the courage to keep looking until she finds it. I hope we all do.

Jacqueline Gay Walley has published eight novels.  She has written plays and two films based on her books. She currently lives in New York.
