Review: Nunsense is marvelous at Colonial Playhouse

By Betty Lou Roselle

Colonial Playhouse is offering a stellar production of Nunsense on their stage. This play and music by Dan Goggin is always a crowd-pleaser but under the direction of Micki Sharpe it soars.

The talented cast of Nunsense at the Colonial Playhouse.

The Nunsense concept originated as a line of greeting cards featuring a nun offering tart quips with a clerical slant. The cards caught on so quickly that Goggin decided to expand the concept into a cabaret show called The Nunsense Story, which opened for a four-day run at Manhattan’s Duplex and remained for 38 weeks, encouraging its creator to expand it into a full-length theater production.

This is a play I have seen several times (I was even in a production myself) but this is the best I’ve seen. You will fall in love with the nuns in this cast which includes: Maria Seigenthaler (Sister Mary Regina, Reverend Mother), Susan Wefel (Sister Mary Hubert – Mistress of Novices), Danielle Lachall (Sister Robert Anne), Heidi Starr (Sister Mary Amnesia) and Evelyn Doran (Sister Mary Leo).

Director Sharpe delivers a tight show with no weak links that gives all her nuns their moment in the spotlight.

Maria Seigenthaler is terrific as Reverend Mother. Her commitment to discipline completely falls apart under the influence and the results are hysterical.

Susan Wefel is great as the second in command who grudgingly accepts her position for the most part. Just A Coupl’a Sisters with Sister Hubert and Reverend Mother was fun.

Danielle Lachall’s Robert Anne is supposed to be an understudy but is fighting to get to show her stuff and when she finally does, WOW! She really sells the song, I Just Want To Be A Star.

Heidi Starr is wonderfully clueless as Sister Amnesia and knocks your socks off with puppetry. She regains her memory with the song  I Could Have Gone To Nashville (well done).

Evelyn Doran is lovely as the youngest nun Sister Mary Leo. She dreamed of being a ballet star but we’re all glad she decided to become one of the Little Sisters of Hoboken. I enjoyed The Biggest Ain’t The Best with Sister Hubert.

Micki Sharpe not only directed this show but also provided the set design, sound design and helped with set decoration and costumes. Peggy Oleynick did a nice job of stage managing and Nancy Reeves handled light and sound beautifully. Set Construction included Ted Beaumont, Ron Hill, Chuck McCallum, Dennis Spence and Dave Sadler. Set Decoration included: Peggy Oleynick, Maria Seigenthaler and Susan Wefel.

Make sure you get out and see this show! There are six performances left: Sept. 26, 27, 28; Oct. 3, 4 and 5.
